Mountain Tortoise at The Vineyard
The largest species of Tortoises in Africa and a resident of the Vineyard Hotel since the early 1980s. Our tortoises are docile yet ambitious and seem to find themselves on center stage most of the time. Whether they are walking down the aisle following a bride or sneaking some delicious hibiscus flowers at the restaurants, our Tortoises are a prominent feature of the Hotel.
Activities
Leisure activities at the Hotel include spa treatments, guided walks and more. Top local experiences are within walking distance or a short drive away. The Hotel is also ideally located just off the main Peninsula sightseeing route, 10 minutes from the city and an hour’s drive from the Cape Winelands.
Suburban Cape town boasts entertainment galore. The Baxter Centre (10 minutes drive) hosts top drama, dance, music and comedy. Maynardville Open-air Theatre (10 minutes drive) presents annual Shakespeare and ballet seasons in January/ February. Kirstenbosch’s Summer concerts offer top local/global music acts on its lawns from November to end-March. Nearby Cavendish Square also has a large cinema complex.
The Constantia Winelands, praised by Europeans from Napoleon to Jane Austen, are over the hill from the Hotel. Estates like Klein Constantia afford a chance to discover classic vintages and Cape Dutch homesteads, and are the ideal ‘alternative’ for time-limited guests unable to visit the Stellenbosch region. Josephine Mill, 10 minutes from the Hotel, is an opportunity to experience South Africa’s original beer and Brewing history.
There are a variety of local fine art and craft facilities in the southern suburbs. One of the loveliest is the Montabello Design Centre, located within walking distance of the Hotel. Synonymous with some of the roots of Cape art and design, it houses fine art, ceramic, jewellery, craft and other working studios as well as a restaurant and nursery. Locally made art, crafts and gifts are for sale. An art-lovers ‘must- see’.
