Nunda River Lodge, situated in the Kavango east region of Namibia, is an experience seldom encountered in the Southern African continent with its homely relaxed atmosphere enhanced with a true African wildlife experience. Nunda, the local Thimbukushu name given to the fruit of the Jackalberry tree, is situated on the Okavango River in the homeland of the Hambukushu tribe.
Nunda River Lodge is centrally situated as a destination in itself. Spend at least two days or more exploring the region before travelling on to the Okavango Delta, Etosha Pans, Zambia or Victoria Falls. Excellent birding, magical wildlife encounters coupled with great fishing opportunities as well as diverse cultural experiences will only make you want to return.
Rooms
Nunda River Lodge offers 7 large tastefully furnished, twin bed, en-suite Meru tents, built on wooden decks. Each unit is set amongst huge trees & shrubs offering privacy & seclusion.
Nunda River Lodge also provides 3 large thatched, twin bed, en-suite chalets. All units have covered decks which overlook the river. Comfortable two roomed, twin bed guide unit with shared ablution facilities are available.
Facilities
The lapa complex consists of an exquisitely furnished thatched restaurant, bar, curio shop, lounge, wine cellar and reception area. A large wooden deck overlooks the river and it is here where one can enjoy sundowners while watching spectacular sunsets, with an abundance of birdlife. Enjoy the splendour as snorting hippos make their way downstream to their feeding grounds.
Activities
Activities include guided game drives, boat cruises, angling expeditions and traditional Mokoro canoe trips down the river. Guided birding and nature walks are a rewarding experience, as are the cultural walks through traditional villages. Various species of Tilapia, Sharptooth Catfish, Nembwe as well as the legendary Tiger fish are some of the fish species that entice anglers to wet their lines at this popular spot. Daily game drives to the Mahangu and Buffalo Core Areas in an open vehicle is a truly magnificent experience.
Various wildlife species that one can expect to see are wild dog, lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, Letchwe, Sitatunga, hippo, crocodile and a host of other antelope species. The area is also home to the largest herds of sable and roan antelope in Africa.
The region is home to an estimated 430 species of birds with over 20 endemic or near endemic species. Many special species include Rock Pranticole, Yellow Wagtail, Wattled Crane, Great Snipe, African Rail and African Skimmers.
