Information

BüllsPort is one of the oldest farms in Namibia and is located 250 km southwest of Windhoek. The guest farm and its campsites are the doorway to exploring the Naukluft massive. In today’s world of superficial entertainment the activities like hiking and horse back trails bring you close to experience the adventures of nature.

The Naukluft Mountains around BüllsPort are a paradise for hikers, horseback riders, bikers, off roaders and Para gliders. For all guest staying at Büllsport there is a large number of well marked and maintained trails.

Make BüllsPort your starting point or base camp for the many different trails to explore the fascinating flora and fauna of the Naukluft Mountains. Leave your car for some days and adventure into nature. Easy walks, day hikes with good maps or multi-day hikes in the Namib Naukluft national park with or without guide are on offer.

The Naukluft is part of the “Great Escarpment” and named by a narrow gorge in the east of the massif, the “Nau-Kluft” meaning narrow gorge. This massif, which rises approximately 1000m above the foreland, offers a spectacular mountain landscape with deep canyons.

The dolomite of the covering rock absorbs the low rainfall and emits the water to many spring horizons, so one finds water-bearing streams all year round, which support lots of game. Not only kudu, springbok and oryx are located here, but also the unique endemic Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra, as well as klipspringer, jackals, bat-eared fox, genet cats and Leopards.

Büllsport Camping site Exclusive Camping site for one group only

The camping is exclusive for one group at one time and for true nature lovers. Meals and tours are available on request if pre-arranged. The site is 3Km’s away from the guest farm locality, tugged away in the mountains, with sedan access. The campsite is equipped with 2 showers, (the water for the showers is heated up via a “donkey” – this is a boiler fired with wood, which can be bought in our shop), 2 flush toilets, 2 sinks for cleaning of cutlery and a lapa with roof for shadow. The rate for this exclusive site disregard of the number of the group.

Shared camping site @ Büllsport Guest Farm

This campsite is also for true nature lovers and is tugged away neatly at the foot of the Naukluft mountains. At this site we host more than one group at any time. Meals and tours are available on request if pre-arranged. The site is 3Km’s away from the guest farm locality tugged away in the mountains, with sedan access, and offers: 2 showers, (the water for the showers and sinks is heated up by a “donkey” – this is a boiler fired with wood, which can be bought in our shop), 2 flush toilets, 2 sinks for cleaning of cutlery and a lapa with roof for shadow.

Activities

Walking Trails

Archaeological Trail
You have the choice between to hiking trails: a short and easy circular hike and an extension for those who want to see more. Both trails, the long and the short one, start and end at the BuellsPort farmhouse. On this hike you pass important stations which played a role in the life of a human of the Stone Age. Our direct ancestor, homo sapiens sapiens, was active in this area 50.000 years ago hunting with arrow and bow. Its weapons and tools made of stone are still evidences of its existence in this region. A little collection is exhibited in the farmhouse.
Bulls Head Trail Follow the yellow markers – marked in a clockwise direction. There is an extension to this trail for more experienced hikers. It means taking 1 extra litre of water and add an hour to the time needed. For capable riders this trail can be done on horseback. Bird lovers must spend some time at the lake which you find at the beginning of the trail on your left. This lake holds water for most of the year starting after the rains in March. (You can revisit this lake on your return). The trail follows the dry river bed where many different Acacia trees and some less common trees like the Buffalo Thorn and others form a linear forest. At the foot of the Bulls Head mountain you will find a ruin of the first farmer, Hans Kisker, who lived here about 90 years ago. Here the climb to the bushmen cave starts to your right. This is more difficult but rewarding for the view you will find from the top. The cave is deep and scary. Going around the mountain you will find an overhanging rock used as shelter by the bushmen in ancient times. Coming all the way around the Bulls Head, some 300m behind a herdsman’s hut, you will find most of the year water dammed up in the river by the remains of the dam original built by Hans Kisker. A very good spot for birding and seeing baboons.
Rock Arch Trail The Rock Arch trip is a guided trip. It starts with an interesting 4X4 drive up the mountain which takes between 1 to 1.5 hrs, but beware, the drive is not for people with a fierce fear for heights. On the drive Klipspringer and Black Eagle are often seen, and on occasion the Hartmanns Mountain Zebra are also seen. Flora along the way is also amazing, with the different euphorbias and aloes scattered among the rocks. Once at the top, we take a 10 minute walk to the edge of the gorge from where you have a breathtaking view of the gorge as well as the Rock Arch. For those who are feeling fit, there is a Zebra path going down to the Arch, but the path is quite rocky and a bit slippery in one or two places, so good walking shoes are a must. But it is well worth the walk, as you get to see the Arch from close up. After sitting and listening to the birds and Dassies, we return to the car for another exciting drive back to the Farmhouse. The whole trip takes between 3 and 4 hrs, so don’t forget some water, a hat and walking shoes.
Kudu Trail This is a short self-guided trail which starts and ends at the farmhouse. It is a 3km long circular trail which takes about 1.5 hrs to complete. The Kudu trail is a nice walk to see birdlife as you are always within a stone’s throw of the Tsondab river where birds, such as Goshawks, Hammerkop, Hoepoe and Plovers – to name just a few, can be seen in and amongst the various Acacias. Nevertheless, other animals such as the much loved Baboons, and antelope such as Kudu, Blessbok and Springbok are often seen. The walk is easy as the trail is set in the BuellsPort plains, but closed shoes are a good idea because of the thorns. A hat plus about half a litre of water should also not be forgotten. Don’t forget something warm in winter and some bug spray if walking after the rains. Mosquitoes like to breed in the river. So grab your binoculars and have a good walk.
Quiver Tree Gorge Take part on a hike in the Namib Naukluft Park. The area of the Naukluft Mountains offers deep gorges, caves, and bubbling springs. The trail leads to the plateau and the Quiver Tree Gorge. Along the way we see many antelopes, with some luck even the rare mountain zebra. The Quiver Tree Gorge Trail is approximately 6 hours and is one of the most beautiful trails in the Naukluft Mountains.

Horsing around on BuellsPort

From riding lessons (30 min) and rides for beginners (45 min) to more demanding rides for advanced riders (45 min to 8 h): At BüllsPort every horse enthusiast will get his money’s worth. All our horses are well trained, comfortable to ride and come with equipment and a trained riding guide.  Please note: In line with international standards, a maximum weight of 90 kg per rider applies. Kindly book all rides in advance, as the horses often graze in the veld.

Farm Drive

Experience real farm hospitality at BüllsPort, where Johanna and Ernst Sauber breed sheep and keep horses and game, in addition to running the guest business. Get first hand insight into the daily challenges of sustainable farming – in an area near the Namib Desert where average rainfall is not more than 120 mm a year.

Horse Carriage Ride

Enjoy nature in a laid-back way and with a touch of nostalgia. The tour takes around 45 minutes, leading through riparian forests of acacia trees and across sparsely covered, bushy plains at the foot of the Naukluft Mountains. Maximum of four people. Flexible departure times. Booking required at least half a day in advance.

4×4 Trails

Conquering the NAUkLuFT on four wheels: This is also possible on the 100 km² area that makes up BüllsPort. On paths that can be steep, narrow and rocky, put your four-wheel driving skills to a challenging test…

Excursion: Nabasib Primary School (self-drive, 15 km on the C 14)

Get familiar with everyday life at a rural Namibian school and encounter the culture of the local people. On an excursion to the Nabasib Primary School, you will be enchanted by the songs of the school choir and experience traditional dance of the Nama in authentic costumes, handmade by the students in sewing class. Not available during school holidays. Booking well in advance essential.
